Psychologists say that
moving can be one of the most stressful events in life. This is
especially true if the move is to a smaller space with less room for the
things you treasure.
This stress can be
emotional, physical, and mental. Just the mention of moving will get a
mix of emotions from people. There may be the sadness of leaving the
home that they love and have enjoyed for many years or moving away from
friends and family. Others may look forward to starting over,
developing new friendships and discovering a different area. However,
for many it is often viewed as an overwhelming time.
Certain tasks in the move
process will also stress your physical and mental endurance. Digging
out boxes that have been stored for years, making decisions regarding
what will fit in the new home, arranging the details of the move, and
unpacking and setting up on arrival are several that may become more
than you can handle.
There are a few things you
can do to make this process more manageable. This newsletter will be
looking at these and others in more depth throughout the year.
-
Acknowledge your
emotions. Try to focus your attention on the wonderful times that
lie ahead rather than what you will be leaving.
-
Allow others to help
you. Whether it be assisting with the physical packing or
organizing different details of the move, take them up on their kind
offers.
-
Start in advance. Don’t
leave it until last minute. Do a little every day and it won’t seem
like such a big task.
-
Take care of yourself.
This process can be tiring and very busy so make sure to get enough
sleep and eat right. Still take time to enjoy your friends and the
sights around you.
